Thomas William Selleck was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 29, 1945. His father, Robert Dean Selleck, was a real estate investor. His mother stayed at home to look after the children. Tom had three siblings. The Selleck family moved to Sherman Oaks, California, in 1948.
