We Australians have a love-hate relationship with our flag carrier. But despite its many problems, flying at the pointy end no doubt makes travelling with Qantas much more enjoyable.

Whether you're a seasoned frequent flyer or just starting, here are a few ways to get more Qantas Status Credits and the privileges higher status brings when flying with Qantas and Jetstar, or their oneworld and partner airlines.

Key takeaways

  • There aren't many options for earning Qantas Status Credits that don't involve flying, but they do exist.
  • Credit cards are probably the most reliable and accessible way to boost your status.
  • Time-limited offers from Qantas partners offer an intermittent way to fill your bag.

Generally available offers

Apart from flying, there aren't many ways to earn Status Credits reliably. Here are your options.

Hit Qantas Green and get Status Credits

Availability: Constant | Potential: Medium | Effort: Medium

Complete a series of tasks such as offsetting your carbon emissions from a flight, buying eco-friendly wine through Qantas Wines, or donating Qantas Points to an environmentally-themed charity. Once you are Qantas Green, you can choose between bonus Qantas Status Credits or Qantas Points.

Earn Status Credits with a credit card

Availability: Decent | Potential: High | Effort: Medium

Some credit cards provide a one-time bonus of Status Credits. Others offer extra Status Credits when paying for Qantas flights using that card.

Typically there aren't many offers available on the market, and if there is one, it's usually with one of the more upmarket cards. If you buy tickets regularly instead of redeeming points for flights, a card that pays bonus Status Credits on flight purchases may be more beneficial.

Intermittently available offers

Qantas' partners run offers to earn Status Credits occasionally. If you catch one of them, it can be an easy way to earn more Status Credits quickly without setting foot on a plane.

Transfer points from Amex Membership Rewards

Availability: Intermittent | Potential: High | Effort: Low

Qantas may also offer Status Credits as an incentive for transferring credit card points to Qantas Frequent Flyer. For example, a 2021 promotion offered one Status Credit for every 5,000 points converted from the Ascent level of America Express Membership Rewards.

Earn Qantas Status Credits with BP Rewards

Availability: Intermittent | Potential: High | Effort: Low

BP Rewards have, in the past, offered bonus Qantas Status Credits for new members who hit a spending target. For example, in late 2021, they offered 50 bonus Qantas Status Credits for joining BP Rewards and making at least 5 purchases of $50 or more.

Get Status Credits from flight cancellations

Availability: Intermittent | Potential: High | Effort: Low

If your Qantas flight has been cancelled, you may be given the opportunity to choose between a refund or a voucher and Status Credits. Your future travel plans may determine which you would prefer.
