Things to consider

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Credit card sign up bonuses. Nearly every Qantas credit card has a sign up bonus, allowing you to quickly earn a large number of Qantas Points.
  • Earn from everyday spending. Get rewarded when you buy groceries, fill up your car, go shopping, and pay bills.
  • Lounge access. Some premium Qantas credit cards come with lounge access at domestic and international airport lounges.
  • Complimentary insurance. Many of the high-end Qantas cards have insurance for overseas travel, lost luggage, flight cancellation, etc.

Cons

  • Annual fees. These can be high on the premium cards and add up quickly if multiple cards are open.
  • High interest rates. Expect interest rates on purchases to be high. Interest charged when carrying a balance will quickly erode the value of Qantas Points earned.
  • Qantas Points expire. It's important — and very easy — to stay active and avoid this from happening.
  • Point caps. Lower-end Qantas credit cards may have a cap on the number of points you can earn in a given period, which can be inconvenient and disappointing. Be sure to check the terms and conditions before applying.
