Early life
Bill Clinton was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas. Three months before his birth, his father died unexpectedly in a car accident. Soon after his birth, his mother, Virginia Dell Cassidy, relocated to New Orleans to get a nursing degree. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Eldridge and Edith Cassidy, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
His mother moved to Hot Springs after her 1950 homecoming and subsequent marriage to Roger Clinton. Bill legally changed his name when he reached 15 to take his stepfather's surname. Bill's political aspirations developed at an early age and were solidified—by his own account—in July 1963 when he met and shook hands with President John F. Kennedy.
Education
Clinton has a degree in international affairs from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. (1968). During his freshman and sophomore years, he was elected student president. During his junior and senior years, he worked as an intern for Sen. J. William Fulbright, the Arkansas Democrat who chaired the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
After graduating, Clinton won a Rhodes Scholarship to University College, Oxford, and then enrolled in Yale Law School. After graduating from Yale University Law School in 1973, Clinton joined the University of Arkansas School of Law faculty, where he taught until 1976.
In 1974 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives. In the following year, he was elected attorney general of Arkansas, and in 1978 he won the governorship, becoming the youngest governor the country had seen in 40 years.
Family life
Bill met Hillary Rodham, his future wife, at Yale in 1975. One daughter would eventually be born to them, Chelsea. The couple has been incredibly protective of their daughter, wishing her to live a quiet life away from the glare of the media.
Hilary took an active role in her husband's political career and went on to have a political career of her own, going on to run for the presidency herself in 2008 and 2016. Bill and Hillary had long been consumed by their work obligations and commitment to the public good, but they also kept a private life. There were allegations of sexual misconduct on Bill's behalf in the late '80s and early '90s, but the couple remained strong and appeared on "60 Minutes" to quell these rumors. Eventually, Bill testified to a grand jury that he had not been wholly truthful in earlier statements about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and made a televised speech highlighting the damage the affair had done to the First Family.
How did Bill Clinton build his net worth?
Bill served as president of the United States from 1993 to 2001.
The Clintons were officially in debt when they departed the White House due to Bill's legal expenses. Bill made more than $100 million in speaking engagement fees during the following ten years. In addition, he received the most significant book advance of all time, $15 million, in 2001 for "My Life," which became a bestselling book. Up to this point, speaking engagements, book advances and royalties, investment income, and consultancy fees have brought in more than $250 million for Bill and Hillary. The pair has been making $10 to $30 million annually in previous years.
While serving as Arkansas's governor and attorney general, Bill Clinton never received a salary over $35,000. At the time, Hillary was the family's primary provider, earning around $110,000 a year as a partner in a Little Rock law firm. In addition, she regularly made about $60,000 a year from business board fees in the late 80s and early 90s, just before she entered the White House, for a total income of about $180,000.
Hillary's income decreased to nil during the first few years of Bill's presidency while he made an estimated $200,000 base salary. Thanks to royalties from the publication of Hillary's book "It Takes A Village," their joint income increased to $1 million in 1996.
How has Bill Clinton spent his wealth?
Clinton and his wife are private, and not much is not known about how they spend their wealth besides their charity, the Clinton Foundation. However, there has been much speculation — to say the least — as to the organization's funding and overall purpose.
