How did Duncan Bannatyne build his net worth?
Bannatyne was a twenty-something who moved between jobs. After returning to Clydebank, he trained to become an agricultural fitter and then traveled around the country, fixing tractors — humble beginnings for the future millionaire.
He lived in Jersey, where he worked and partied hard. Bannatyne got an HGV license and had various jobs, one of which would influence his life profoundly: selling ice cream.
It was here where he met his first wife, Gail. However, Jersey is an uninviting place to do business if you aren't a local, so four years after moving there, Bannatyne — and Gail — relocated to Stockton-on-Tees in North East England. He still didn't have a bank account by the time he was 30, not that he desperately needed one given his low income.
Relocating to Stockton-on-Tees was the making of Bannatyne. He bought an ice cream van for £450, then quickly expanded his business by purchasing additional vans during a period that became known as the Glasgow Ice Cream Wars. In the end, Bannatyne sold his ice cream business for £28,000.
His next business was launching a nursing home called Quality Care Homes after the government declared a requirement for nursing homes and offered tax incentives to new nursing homes being opened.
At the same time, he founded Just Learning. Conservative MP Michael Fallon acted as his CEO from 1992 - 1997.
He sold Quality Care Homes for £26 million and Just Learning for £12 million in 1997.
Bannatyne has since expanded into health clubs, spas, hotels, and property investing operating under his Bannatyne Group. The group acquired 26 health centers from Hilton Hotels in August 2006 for £90 million, making it one of the UK's largest operators of gyms and spas.
