Graham started his career as an officer in the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG Corps) in the United States Air Force in 1982 and began active duty that year. Between 1984 and 1988, he served as the Air Force's chief prosecutor in Europe after his transfer to Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany.
In 1989, he returned to South Carolina and entered private legal practice. He served as assistant county attorney for Oconee County from 1988 to 1992 and city attorney for Central from 1990 to 1994. After leaving the Air Force, Graham joined the South Carolina Air National Guard in 1989, where he served until 1995, then joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
In 1998, Graham was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 2004, he received his promotion to colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve at a White House ceremony officiated by President George W. Bush. In 2014, Graham received a Bronze Star medal for meritorious service as a senior legal adviser to the Air Force in Iraq and Afghanistan from August 2009 to July 2014.
In 2015, he retired at his last rank of Colonel from the Air Force with over 33 total years of service.
Graham earned points toward a military pension but was unpaid since he was ineligible for a military paycheck during his time in federal government service.
The self-proclaimed "Reagan-style Republican" was first elected in the senate in 2002, succeeding Senator Strom Thurmond. He won the Republican primary unopposed and garnered 54% of the vote to become South Carolina's first new U.S. senator since Fritz Hollings in 1966. In 2014, Graham surprised many by defeating the Democratic nominee, State Senator Brad Hutto. In November 2018, Senator Graham took over as chair of the Judiciary Committee, pending his formal selection by colleagues.
He has served on the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Environment and Public Works. Graham is also a member of the board of directors of the International Republican Institute.
On April 19, 2015, Graham announced that he was "91% sure" he would run for president on Fox News. "If I can raise the money, I'll do it," he said. On June 1, 2015, he officially announced his candidacy for President, which he suspended on December 21, 2015, due to a lack of support and poor polling. He later endorsed former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Though Donald Trump became the official Republican nominee in May 2016, Graham announced that he would not vote for Trump or Hillary Clinton. Lindsey's relationship with Trump has always been hot and cold.
