How did Clarence Thomas build his net worth?
Born in 1948 in rural Georgia to a low income family, he was raised mostly by his maternal grandfather.
Knowing that he was a bright student, Thomas attended The College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and progressed to study law at Yale graduating in 1974, after initially considering becoming a priest.
After practicing law in a range of different roles for about 15 years and became a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 1989.
In 1991, Clarence was nominated to the Supreme Court by Republican President G.W. Bush. After a heated hearing, which he describes as "high-tech lynching" Thomas was confirmed, 52-48, to take his place as the second African American to ever sit on the high bench.
In addition to being on the Supreme Court, Justice Thomas teaches constitutional law at George Washington University as an adjunct professor.
And he has published two books, including his 2008 book "My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir" earning him a $1.5 million advance from publisher HarperCollins.
Thomas and his wife Virginia also own an estate in Fairfax Station, Virginia on the edge of Washington D.C where the median price in 2022 was $1 million.
