How did Steve Bannon build his net worth?
Steve Bannon is a controversial figure in American politics with a varied career and outsized sphere of influence thanks to his substantial and engaged social media following.
In nearly every interview or episode of his "War Room" podcast — one of the most popular in the U.S. across podcasting platforms — Steve Bannon refers to the time he spent in the Navy as an officer before he went on to join Goldman Sachs as an investment banker.
In 1993, Steve became the manager of the ecological experiment Biosphere 2. Around the same time, he was trying his hand as a Hollywood producer. According to the IMDb, Bannon has at least 19 films, mainly in the style of a documentary, credited to his portfolio. More notable titles include "Clinton Cash" (2016), a documentary about how Bill and Hillary Clinton's organization is funded, and "Battle for America" (2010), which looks at the growing divide and enmity between conservatives and the state apparatus.
Bannon has interviewed many leading names in conservative politics for his politically-themed documentaries, including Ann Coulter, Lou Dobbs, Newt Gingrich, and Michael Flynn. Stars in movies he has helped produce include Val Kilmer in "The Steam Experiment" (2009) and Ed Harris and January Jones in "Sweetwater" (2013).
With his media connections and what he learned at Goldman Sachs, Bannon and his business partners founded Bannon & Co, a boutique investment company.
Bannon & Co dealt mainly with media companies and represented various high-profile clients. One such client was Westinghouse Electric, which Bannon & Co represented as part of the sale of Castle Rock Entertainment to Turner Broadcasting System.
Bannon was offered a share of the revenue generated by five of the TV shows in the sale, including the 1990s-era seminal comedy show "Seinfeld." Each time those shows air, he gets a residual payment. Seinfeld, which has a cult following, has generated billions of dollars in revenue and made the show's leading protagonist, Jerry Seinfeld, an extremely wealthy man. How much Steve Bannon makes from this revenue-sharing deal is unknown.
He sold Bannon & Co in 1998 and has since held positions in various companies with varying degrees of success.
After a stint at Breitbart, the right-leaning political news blog started by Andrew Breitbart, Bannon joined former President Donald Trump as an advisor at The White House, where his combative style made him few friends before he left in 2017.
In 2020, Bannon and the Chinese exile and billionaire Miles Guo raised $300 million in a private offering for GTV Media Group, Inc. Bannon was listed as a company advisor. In August of that year, the FBI and SEC launched a probe into the company when "some investors began pushing for refunds after they said they never received official documentation verifying their investments in GTV Media."
In 2022, Bannon was charged by the Manhattan district attorney’s office as "the architect of a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud thousands of donors across the country" who had financially supported We Build the Wall, an organization that sought to build sections of the US-Mexico border wall. Despite publicly stating that donations were for the construction of the wall, it is alleged that some donated funds were paid to Bannon. He pleaded not guilty.
