How did Niall Ferguson build his net worth?
Niall Ferguson made most of his money as a historian, academic, author, presenter, entrepreneur, and public speaker.
He writes and lectures on economic, financial, and international history. He has been a Newsweek writer and an editor on Bloomberg Television.
Over his storied academic career, Ferguson has been a researcher, lecturer, tutor, and professor at some of the world's most prestigious universities, including Peterhouse, Cambridge; Jesus College, Oxford; Harvard University; Harvard Business School; London School of Economics; and the Hoover Institution.
Time Magazine named Ferguson one of the 100 most influential people in 2004. His documentary series, "The Ascent of Money," earned an Emmy Award for Best Documentary in 2009. He has written and presented several other documentaries.
Ferguson's business career has been as varied as his academic career.
He founded the educational technology company, Boxmind, in 2000. He was joined on its editorial board by other luminary scholars, including Dr David Womersley, Professor John Kay, Professor Peter Atkins, and Professor Richard Dawkins. However, the company ultimately failed. "We were ahead of our time," he said.
In 2006, Ferguson and two co-founders set up a television production company based in London called Chimerica Media Ltd. with the sole focus "to make history documentaries." Company returns filed with Companies House in the UK show a modest amount of cash at hand in the company's coffers. Ferguson's address as one of the company's directors is listed as a freehold detached property at Sker Farm, Porthcawl, CF36 3PJ. The property was sold, presumably to Ferguson, in 2004 for £950,000. Its value is now considerably higher.
He set up Greenmantle, which is a "macroeconomic and geopolitical advisory firm with offices in New York, London, and San Francisco." He has or has had advisory roles at the GLG Partners hedge fund and Morgan Stanley.
Ferguson is what can only be described as a prolific author, having published books on the history of money, the British Empire, American colonialism, World War I, and the history of civilization. Although his books are not to be found at the top of many best-seller lists, the royalties they produce help pad out his net worth.
Although the right-leaning Ferguson was never a core member of what Eric Weinstein coined the "Intellectual dark web," his wife was mentioned as a "member" of the loosely affiliated group by Bari Weiss, at the time a New York Times journalist. Ferguson remained on the fringe of the group, appearing at events and talks or on podcasts with more prominent IDW members Ben Shapiro, Joe Rogan, Douglas Murray, Dennis Prager, Dave Rubin, and Brett Weinstein.
How has Niall Ferguson spent his wealth?
Today Niall Ferguson lives in the United States. As one would expect from a man who spends his life advising people on the value of money, he lives a moderate lifestyle. No big spending here... like a true Scotsman!
